the Patient One
Mama Otter
Mother — teacher of the three pups, the most graceful swimmer
Loving, patient mother.

Mama is the heart of the little family. She is smaller and slimmer than Papa, warm russet from nose to tail, with a soft cream heart-shaped bib on her chest — look for it whenever she sits up.
She strung five vine cords from things the river gave them: Papa's wooden bead, her scallop, a red seed, a grey pebble and a rose-pink shell. That is how you can tell everyone apart, even in silhouette.
She teaches the pups everything — how to swim, how to fish, when to come home. In the water she is the most graceful swimmer on the whole river.
Fun facts
- My heart bib reads best when I sit up — watch for it!
- I made all five pendant cords myself, from river finds.
- My tail stays slender — the thick one belongs to Papa.
